Melted Crayon Christmas Ornament
Difficultly Level: 3/5
Areas of Learning Development: Fine Motor, Gross Motor, Creative Expression, Colour Mixing, Knowledge & Understanding of the World (science), Social & Emotional Wellbeing
Creativity, Science & Great Fun!
Your child will be ‘wowed’ by this super fun craft activity (I was pretty wowed myself). Not only will your child develop their fine and gross motor skills but they will also get to experiment with colour mixing and exploring changes of state in matter (how heating and cooling affects something).
Your child might enjoy watching this (very catchy & slightly annoying) song about heating and cooling.
The Colour Wheel
Why not introduce The Colour Wheel to your child? Experimenting with mixing colours is one of the objectives from the Early Years Framework so its defiantly worth a look. This website offers colour wheel printables.
Here’s another (very catching but slightly less annoying) song. This time it teaches children to remember the three primary colours from the colour wheel.
Preparation is the Key
As always, I suggest before you complete this activity with your kids you have a go at it yourself. That way you can iron out any lumps and bumps in the process.
When you’re ready to get crafty with the kids set out all of the resources you need before they get involved. This reduces the number of questions your child will ask – this is when craft can get a bit stressful.
Make yourself a cuppa, put on some happy music and enjoy crafting with your kids.
Why not put on a Christmas CD to really get the season going? I just love the moral from ‘How The Grinch Stole Christmas.’

How To Make your Melted Crayon Christmas Ornament
1 – Choose the colours you want to use to make your first ornament.
2 – Peel the paper off the crayons (great activity for fine motor control!)
3 – Grate the crayon onto a tray, piece of paper or box to contain the shavings (once again, a brilliant fine motor activity).
4 – Remove the top from the ornament and carefully put the crayon shavings inside.
5 – At this point you might want to also add some fine glitter.
6 – Replace the lid of the ornament and put in a tray or box.
7 – Using the highest temperature on the hair dryer melt the wax inside the ornament.
8 – Keep melting the wax and turning the ornament until you reach your desired effect.
9 – Hang proudly on your tree using the provided silver thread.
10 – Take a photo of your kids melted crayon Christmas ornament and tag @yourtalkingteacher. I can’t wait to see what you make as a family. I’m ready for some unusual colour way inspirations!
Melted Crayon Christmas Ornament Helpful Tips:
Grating the crayons can get a bit messy so make sure you are working on something that will contain the mess (like a tray).
Watch out when heating the ornament, it can get very hot! This is why we used a tray with a lip. The children chased the ornament around the tray with the hair dryer (they loved this!)
If you allow the hairdryer to get too close to the ornament it will melt!
The more shavings you put in the ornament the more coverage you will have. This doesn’t mean you have to put loads of shavings in every ornament, you might want to create a speckled look instead.
Trust your child’s colour choices. I was a bit apprehensive with some of the colour combos my kids suggested but they came out great!
Have fun with your kids, enjoy getting creative yourself!
